Your role:

As a Maritime Warfare Officer Submariner, you’ll be a vital member of the command team. You are responsible for the safety of the submarine and will be a leader to the personnel onboard. Your day-to-day responsibilities could include leading a team of sailors, directing the operations of personnel, safely navigating the submarine and overseeing the use of weapons systems.

Whether you have recently finished school, currently studying, already in the workforce or you have no experience at all, we’re hiring. You’ll be paid from day one to gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job training. If you are currently studying at uni, you may be able to earn a salary, receive subsidised housing and get your uni fees covered through a Defence University Sponsorship.

Your duties include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Bridgemanship and navigation skills
  • Contributing to submarine warfare activities and tactics
  • Monitoring of submarine safety
  • Managing and leading the crew and their activities
  • Being responsible for the submarine and wellbeing of crew
  • Keeping watch
  • Control of the vessel, including safety and navigation
  • Overseeing sensors and weapon systems

Salary: 

When you first join the Navy and while studying for your degree at the university of your choice, you will be paid between $35,326 and $54,166 depending on your year of study. 

Upon completion of your initial military and employment training, you’ll enjoy a salary package starting from $106,884.

For this role, you must be over 17 at time of enlistment, an Australian Citizen, have completed Year 12 and obtained a high enough entrance rank to qualify.

To get sponsored to finish your degree you must have completed at least one year of an appropriate degree and have no more than three years of full time study outstanding to complete your degree.
