Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid - the High Voltage transmission network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand.

In addition to owning and operating the grid, Transpower also operates the electricity system, dispatching electricity though the wholesale electricity market.

About the team

The Markets and Business Team drives value through improving market performance, informing market development, and enhancing market understanding. This is particularly crucial as the market adapts to new technologies such as solar panels, EV's and battery storage.

About the opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Market Analyst to join the Market and Security of Supply team in Wellington. The team is responsible for supporting the Wholesale Electricity Market, and Transpower in its role as the System Operator.

As a member of this collaborative team you'll help to inform policy, model electricity supply, and investigate system changes that will enable new technology to be deployed across the power system - as well as supporting business as usual activities.

You'll undertake both qualitative and quantitative analysis and support day to day operations, and be comfortable questioning, finding, and analysing information, and reporting concise insights for both internal and external stakeholders including market participants and the electricity authority.

You'll also:

  • Undertake investigations and support the conceptual design and delivery of projects
  • Improve market understanding in the broader company
  • Contribute to team initiatives to enhance market analytics and information to the market
  • Become an expert on both the systems and regulatory framework which facilitate the wholesale electricity market

Delivering effective operational support, you will be able to prioritise work including projects, whilst demonstrating agility, flexibility, and resilience in assessing often fluid situations that require answers at short notice.

This is a great opportunity for a graduate with excellent Python skills who is interested in developing their career in the energy sector. Qualifications in power systems, mechanical engineering or economics would be ideal, but ultimately - we are looking for potential, and full training will be provided.

To be considered, your CV and covering letter will ideally demonstrate:

  • You are either a graduate with a great attitude and aptitude and relevant qualifications, or you have 2+ years' experience working in an analytical role with a problem-solving focus
  • Strong Python skills
  • Experience working with PowerBI software (desirable)
  • A passion for problem-solving, analysis and modelling to enable business clarity - both retrospective and future-focused
  • Highly effective communication and particularly strong written skills, distilling complex matters to a wide audience
  • A thirst for learning and challenge - you don't mind swimming in the deep end from time to time!
  • Commercial acumen and agility

This role is ideal for a motivated and intellectually curious analyst early in their energy sector career, or a graduate with excellent python skills. The role allows you to develop an understanding of, and contribute to, New Zealand's evolving electricity market.
